Ionic liquids are liquid salts at room temperature. They are employed in pharmaceuticals, cellulose dissolution, solar thermal systems, gas handling, batteries, metal extraction and much more.
Although lot of studies on these materials are recent, the first ionic liquids were discovered at the end of the XIX or early in the XX century.
